This report examines how psychedelics like psilocybin and LSD interact with serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT2A receptor in the prefrontal cortex. These drugs increase cortical entropy, disrupting normal brain activity and leading to hallucinations and altered consciousness. The report highlights the therapeutic potential of psychedelics in treating mental health conditions such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Future research is suggested to focus on developing psychedelics with more controlled effects and non-invasive delivery methods, potentially transforming psychiatric treatment.
Over the past two weeks, I have researched the effects of psychedelic drugs on the brain to explore their potential in mental health treatment. I chose to study this topic because I'm intrigued by the unique experiences psychedelics can induce and the fact that research in that area is still too obscure to guarantee the successful therapeutic potential of these drugs. I'm excited to continue studying this field and hope to contribute to future research that helps us understand how psychedelics can be safely and effectively used to treat mental health conditions.
